Stainless steel crowns are used for very large cavities, cavities that require nerve treatments, and in children with a lot of cavities. These crowns are always done using local anesthesia so your child’s mouth will be numb. The gums surrounding the crowns will appear very irritated. Children’s Motrin or Tylenol should relieve any soreness your child is experiencing. Avoid foods that are extremely hot or cold, because your child may experience sensitivity for a few days. The crowns are glued on with sticky cement. Crowns can be dislodged with sticky candy such as taffy, Now & Laters, and caramel so please avoid these and most other candies. You will notice a number on the side of the crown that will disappear if your child is doing a good job brushing their teeth. The crown and tooth will be lost naturally as they are replaced by permanent teeth.
FAQs
Q1. What is a stainless steel crown?
A stainless steel crown is a preformed metal cap used to cover and protect a damaged or decayed baby tooth. At Prestige Dental, these crowns are commonly used in pediatric dentistry for strength and durability.
Q2. When does a child need a stainless steel crown?
A crown may be recommended if a baby tooth has extensive decay, has had pulp therapy, or is too weak for a filling alone. Prestige Dental suggests crowns to help preserve the tooth until it naturally falls out.
Q3. Are stainless steel crowns safe for children?
Yes. Stainless steel crowns are safe, well-tested, and widely used in pediatric dentistry. Prestige Dental uses high-quality materials that are designed specifically for children’s teeth.
Q4. How long do stainless steel crowns last?
These crowns are very durable and typically last until the baby tooth falls out naturally. Prestige Dental will monitor the crown during routine checkups to ensure proper fit and function.
Q5. Will a stainless steel crown affect eating or speaking?
Most children adjust quickly and can eat and speak normally within a short time. Prestige Dental provides guidance to help your child adapt comfortably after placement.
